Ruby and Rails are a lot of fun. Hmmm, might be fun to create a publicly accessible web application for RV trip planning. Great opportunity to learn how to build and operate a database-based web site and to learn Ruby and Rails in depth.
Much to my pleasure and amazement, the continuoustraveler.com domain was now available. Last time I checked a year or so ago it was not. I got the domain name registered for a few years out.
Next, had to find a hosting service. Wanted one that supported mongrel for running Rails. And of course it had to support MySQL 5.x. And on and on. I reviewed several hosting services before settling on A2Hosting.com. Support has been amazingly good. I've used several hosting services, and A2Hosting.com has the best support yet.
Switched from CVS to Subversion for version control. Subversion does indeed make some things easier, especially moving files (including directories). But it sure does have some quirks of its own. Oh well.
And why, you might ask, would a lone developer bother with version control? 'Cause I'm forever wanting to go back to previous versions of files. I love version control.
